Allows you the ability to use magic devices and wear magic items which you normally wouldn't be able to use because of class or race restrictions. You must perform a check each time you attempt to use a magic item with this skill and may succeed sometimes and fail other times with the same item.

General

Use Magic Device is a class skill for Bards and Rogues. Its mitigating statistic is Charisma.

Functionality

UMD allows a character to equip/use items that their class or race would not usually be able to. A UMD skill check is made each time the character attempts to equip or use such an item.

Items

Equipping items using the UMD skill does not initiate a roll but rather requires that the character has, at the moment the item is equipped, the amount of skill required to use that item.

Race restricted jewlery and clothing require a UMD skill of the item's minimum level plus seven to equip, weapons and armor require the item's minimum level plus ten.

The vast majority of alignment restricted items require a UMD of 20.

Scrolls and Wands

When a player tries to use a scroll/wand of a spell that their class couldn't usually cast a UMD check is initiated. The player rolls 1d20 and adds that to their UMD skill. The difficulty class of this check is equal to 18 plus twice the scroll/wand's caster level.
