Making Wiki Subcategories

From DDO Compendium

Sub-categories are a drop down list inside other categories (but really they're just when you place one category inside another one). You can use them to help group things together so that people don't have to page through so many entries to find what they need in a large category. They can also be used in other fun ways, like making user written game guides!

Sub-categories are easy, let's take a look at how you might make a user created guide using subcategories!

If you wanted to make a 4 part guide on Kobolds, and then make that guide part of the "cool guides" category, you would:

  1. Make one compendium page for parts 1 - 4 the same way you would make a regular page (click here for how to start a basic page if you don't already know)
  2. At the bottom of each page, put the category code with the name of your guide [[Category:Guide_on_Kobolds]]. This will place all 4 pages into a category called "Guide on Kobolds" (click here if you need help with categories)
  3. Then, go into the URL for Guide on Kobolds, (http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Category:Guide_on_Kobolds) and you'll see that it's a category with 4 articles inside it - your 4 parts you placed earlier. You can even edit this category to add an introduction or other decorations.
  4. Now you can make your entire game guide "Guide on Kobolds" a part of the "Cool Guides" category so others can find your guide! Edit the Category:Guide_on_Kobolds page to include the following somewhere inside the page: [[Category:Cool Guides]].

Now your entire guide will be automatically placed inside the category "Cool Guides"!

Also you can put your guide in more than one category too, which is handy. Let's say you wanted your guide on Kobolds to be in Cool Guides, Guides General, and Monster Guides... you just add each one that you want it to be a part of:
[[Category:Cool Guides]] [[Category:General Guides]] [[Category:Monster Guides]]
Your guide (with all its 4 parts) would be neatly listed in all 3 places!
