Creating Links In Your Page

From DDO Compendium

Links are very important, especially if your page needs to link to a guild page, blog, forum thread, or even pages inside the Compendium! There are several different kinds of links, but the most popular for common player pages and updates are the following

 • External Links - They link to places outside the Compendium, like other web pages
 • Internal Links - They link to other pages in the Compendium
 • Category Links - They link to categories in the Compendium

External Links

If you'd like to link to a website outside of the Compendium website, you'll need to make an external link. You can make an external link using the following format:

Left bracket, then the URL, a space, then the name you'd like it to display as, and close it up with a right bracket:
[url name]

Example: If you wanted to link to the DDO forums, you could type:
DDO Forums
Your link will look like this: DDO Forums

Sometimes the Compendium can tell that it is a URL and it will try to automatically link it for you. A very straight forward URL like http://www.ddo.com will show as a link without needing to use the brackets, but if your URL is super long, you'll want to use the naming technique so that it takes up less space. Here are a few examples of different ways you can name a link:

Internal Links

To make a link to other areas of the Compendium, you just need the page name! You don't have to type the entire URL, because the Compendium understands that the page is somewhere in the Compendium. You can make an internal link using the following format:

Two left brackets, the page name as it appears in the url (including spaces), the pipe symbol, the name you'd like it to display as, and two right hand brackets:
What You'd Like The Link To Say

For example, if you wanted to link to a page from the wiki guides, you could type
Adding Info To Your Page which creating a link like this: Adding Info To Your Page

Category Links

Linking to a category is very similar to making an internal link. But you need to add one small thing to make sure that you are linking to the category, and not accidentally adding your page TO a category. You add a colon in the front of the category name! The format is:

Two left brackets, a colon, the category name as it appears in the url (including spaces), the pipe symbol, the name you'd like it to display as, and two right hand brackets:
What You'd Like The Link To Say

If you forget to put the colon in front of the category name, the Compendium will try to place your page into that category, instead of making a link to the category. For example, if you wanted to link to the help guides category, you could type
Compendium For Beginners which creating a link like this: Compendium For Beginners

There are more advanced linking methods, but these are a great start for a beginner! If you'd like to experiment with making links, here is a Compendium Sandbox you can use to try things out! Remember that the Sandbox is frequently erased and over-written by other users, so don't make anything in the sandbox that you plan on keeping!
